Don't go crazy, my dear.
There is no need to take down all the curtains,
making a secure little nest in the closet,
where you can peek out and chuckle,
    keeping your cool, not giving
a damn about that lying air conditioner
or that talking head in the bright box

Don't go crazy, my dear.
The gentle hum of the neon lights outside is not meant
    to keep you awake.
Don't try to bargain with them.
They are not malicious, only forgetful.
The soft, pink glow is only meant
    to illumine your exquisite face.

Don't go crazy, my dear.
Standing in the midst of traffic, shaking your fist
at the cars is no way to increase funding
for the manned space program, and wearing a foil
hat will not stop aliens from reading your mind.
They all have cable and read the tabloids.
    Human thoughts bore them silly.

Don't go crazy, my dear.
Talking to long lost shadow friends will not
erase the past, and sitting in the dark with
your high school yearbook will not make you homecoming queen.
Your echo is warm and cozy,
but you've heard the jokes before,
and force laughter is never pretty.

Don't go crazy, my dear.
    Remember, you really are Napoleon,
but you left your hat and horse on the bus.
Brush off your laurel wreath, my tiny Caesar wannabe,
    prepare for your Waterloo.
Bring your umbrella, pack a lunch,
and this time, be sure to wear warm socks.
