Hotel
Breaking news: Hassan, who runs the Luna Magica, says that they are full through Friday, June 23. However, there is plenty of good accomodation here.
Tim says:
- The rooms are simple and clean. All come with a ceiling fan and there is a large deck where one can sit, play chess and look out at the sea.
An account from November 2004 for hispanophones:
- Luna Mágica: Es el nombre del hotel en el que me alojé a partir del segundo día en Mahabalipuram. Un sitio entrañable en el que yo era el único huésped. Aun es tiempo de monzón en la costa este, por lo que había muy pocos turistas. Situado en la misma playa, era una delicia sentarse a primera hora de la mañana en la terraza observando a los pescadores en plena actividad. [2]

Restaurant
The chef is named Raja, and his signature dish is lobster -- lobsters are kept live in a tank. If you like your food spicy, be sure to say so because he errs on the side of caution. If you're having something to drink, be sure to ask if it is cold!
A formal description:
- Hotel Luna Magica is located on the north end of the Mahabalipuram Beach. Specializing in seafood, it also serves Indian, continental and Chinese delicacies. Outdoor catering services are also available. Luna Magica has a tank full of live lobster and prawns. It is open from 08:30 to 23:30 hrs. [3]
A personal account from November 1996:
- We paused for a couple of Cokes at the Luna Magica restaurant, a new place that had just opened on the north end of the beach. We didn't get any meals, but still enjoyed the cozy atmosphere. A fisherman who was temporarily marooned because of the rough seas entered the restaurant and nonchalantly joined us at our table. At first I assumed he wanted us to change money or something, but he turned out to be a really nice guy who just wanted to talk and practice his English. He was about 25, very thin, and extremely dark, with short curly black hair and thick eyebrows - classic Tamil features, I thought. We talked about the monsoon, fishing, and of course, that perennial favorite topic, the weather in America. [4]
An endorsement in French:
- Le long de la plage, nombres d'auberges offrent poissons, langoustes et crevettes et une vue splendide. La Luna Magica est l'une des meilleures et des plus sympathiques. Et par clair de lune, c'est vraiment magique avec la vue sur le temple devant la mer.
