Mamallapuram (also known as Mahabalipuram) is a coastal town in the southeastern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, 40 miles south of the capital of Chennai. It will host the Shunpiker Summit in June 2006, and eventually, insha'Allah, the Shunpiker Guest House.

There is a beautiful little fishing village on the south east coast of India. There is an ancient shore temple carved out of a single rock very close by. To the left of the temple the fishermen mend their nets, build their small wooden boats, and dry their catch in the sun (since the tsunami, they have gotten a lot of big, brightly painted boats...but the small handmade ones are still favored).
To the right of the temple, Indian tourists come on the weekends to swim in the shallows, ride horses along the surf, and just enjoy the breeze. You have to be careful on this side, because the current can be lethal out in the depths. My friend Sati saved a rich dumbass from Chennai who had gotten drunk and swum out too far. This is the same guy who had insulted him only moments before. After he pulled the fool from the sea, the fellow rewarded Sati by buying him a cola from one of the vendors on the beach.
Sati told him, "Thank you."

Accomodations

Aside from the Hotel Luna Magica, the Hotel Mamalla Heritage (also called the Hotel Mamallabhavan Annexe) has been mentioned a number of times in Shunpiker discussions. Beware of booking this hotel on-line! I booked through hostelworld.com, only to discover that the deposit that I paid to the hotel went to a quiet middleman who simply pocketed it. This is not the Hotel Mamalla Heritage's fault, and it's not a huge amount of money -- but the principle! I have contacted hostelworld.com about this abuse of their system.
